Amanda Palmer: The art of asking

How Does Amanda Palmer reshape the “business” of music?

Amanda Palmer does reshape the “business” of music. She does this in more than one way. I don’t think the word “business” even fits with what Amanda Palmer is trying to do. She completely eliminates the business aspect and focuses on connecting with people in a more personal level. She does this by asking people for help. She doesn't make people pay to see her perform, but asks for help and surprisingly she received helped. This I believe is fantastic. Amanda Palmer has the courage and confidence in her society/fan to simply ask for help while others may shy away because it seems too hard and embarrassing.

How does she redefine the relationship between artist and fans?

When I go to concerts I never get the chance to actually meet and shake hands with the person that I am there to see and support. Instead, I do what every other fan would do which is to yell and wave hoping that they see me. Amanda Palmer redefines the relationship between artist and fans by interacting with her fans. She interacts with them through her blog posts, tweets, and in person. She even goes and spends the night with her fans and let a bunch of drunk men draw on her naked body. That to me is far beyond what an ordinary artist would do with their fans. With that level of interacts who wouldn't want to give her money and support her?

How does her presentational style, both as a street artist and TED speaker reflect and support this relationship?

Amanda Palmer presents her TED talk like she would on the streets where she was asking people for money. She casually stands on the crate and presents a flower. She acts as if she was trying to ask the TED audience for money and trying to connect with them by making eye contact. Her presentational style is relaxed because she is wearing punk-ish attire which shows that she is very comfortable with presenting herself as a street artist. She trusts the audience to not pass judgment. I think that this TED audience gives a perfect example in what she is trying to accomplish. Asking for money from strangers is not easy but she does it because she knows how to connect with people. Giving this TED talk to a strange audience is not easy but she opens up to them and explains what she is trying to accomplish or has already accomplished. She allows the audience to connect with her by simply opening up to them.
