Lavender, sweet pea, cinnamon, candy cane, salt water are
all types of aromas. Often associated with Christmas are the smells of pine
trees, candy canes, cinnamon. Often associated with summer are light and airy
aromas that aren’t too heavy and go with the summer time heat. There is always a
smell for a different place, season or time. Also different types of aromas
that can make one relax when feeling stressed, even the aroma of something like
a pie in the oven that can instantly put a smile on ones face. Aromas a part of
the world and most people, houses, places, trees and flowers have their own.
Every time I would go to my Grandma’s house, as your walked
through the door the smell of rice and beans would engulf you. No matter what
time of the day it was she would always have rice and beans cooking ready to
serve. The smell was a part of her. Even outside of the house there would
always be the faint smell following her. I always just assumed it was a part of her.
When thinking of rice and beans most automatically think
of food that is generally cheap and easy
to buy and nothing else. When one gets a whiff of rice and beans , some get
hungry or just know that there is food being cooked and continue on not
thinking much of anything else really.
I think back to my Jamaican heritage and how rice and beans
are served at every meal. I always think
back to my Grandma. How her embrace always makes me hungry with the smell of
food. The memory of going to her house and instantly knowing that there is food
about to be served.
I really like how you use the smell of the rice and beans to help describe your grandmother and i liked how you tied it into your heritage.

ReplyDeleteI experience the same situation as you do. Even since I was a little kid, my family and I have always reunited to celebrate the holidays, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas, with one another. As a way to celebrate and enjoy the moments we had with one another, we wouldlways come together and enjoy meals together; those of which consist of simlilar meals each year. Lately, many of my relatives have past away and each time my family and I get together to celebrate the holidays, the scent of the food always bring brack the well cherished memories of when all my family was there at the table.
ReplyDeleteI really like this post because it is pretty common to associate smells with people. Whenever I smell vanilla I automatically think of my momma. I also like how you brought it back around to your Jamaican heritage, which is pretty neat.
