The Affect of the Small Things

A snowflake is so small and seemingly insignificant  however carries a much greater meaning. Each snowflake is unique and has its own special shape. There is no two snowflakes the same. Living in the south, snowflakes also bring joy and excitement to people everywhere. At the first sight of snow there is a rush to run outside, stick your tongue out and enjoy the rare occurrence. Growing up in the south we always looked forward to a little snow, and maybe a day out of school. When looking at a picture they look simple but somehow bring joy. Snow is often a sign of the coming of the holiday season. Kids build snowmen, and igloos and make snow angels. Parents enjoy cracking fires and coffee. It doesn't get much better. Snow is a rarity in Georgia, so as a family we would travel to Jackson hole to experience it. And this brought on a whole new view of snowflakes. To me Jackson was heaven covered in an unimaginable number of snowflakes, that gave the place an elegant feel. The snow gave us the ability to try new sports like sledding, and skiing, and snowboarding that never would have been possible in Georgia. And this was thrilling and mind blowing how something as small as a snowflake can be built up into a ski resort for humans to enjoy. However, the build up of snow can cause major problems and disasters, as well, which in many ways is even more amazing. Travelling north excitement at the sight of snow disappears and often turns to worry and concern. Snow flakes are so small but many put together have the ability to do astonishing things. Avalanches kill hundreds, blizzards trap thousands, and millions lose power each year all from the effects of snowflakes. How can something so small carry so much power? Snow flakes have the ability to do so many thing for so many people whether it is good or bad. But there is no denying that snowflakes carry great meaning and carry the power to effect people's lives no matter how small they might be.

  1. wow, this really made me think. I never thought that such a little snowflake and even millions did so much and cause so many different kinds of emotions. Especially living in the south where snow really can be such a rare occurrence one doesn't really think of the destruction a snowflake can cause.

  2. What you said is so true! Snow brings so much joy to people as well as so much sadness. I like how you talked about both sides of how snow affects the lives of others and then how you tied it all together with the power of snow. It is interesting looking at the opinions and thoughts people have of snow based on whether they live in the north or the south. This post was very well written and allows the reader to think and form there own opinion of "snow".

  3. First off, I like how Andy utilizes the word "snowflake." His initial use of the word brings a beautiful individuality to the snow and makes it seem special. Explaining snow's impact on all of the south gives it a more broad emphasis and shows its widespread influence. He then contrasts the good effects of snow to the bad ones. This comparison helps support the title and the power of snow. He explains not only the joy snow can bring, but also the natural disasters it can cause. By the end of the essay, I feel that the "power" of snow was well emphasized and raised snow to a new level.
