Connotation: Politician/Statesman

A politician is used more as an adjective than a noun. We associate a specific adjectives with a politician. These adjectives could vary depending on the person in the political office. A politician can be described as hypocritical, greedy, ignorant, naive, arrogant, etc. Clearly these adjectives are not very positive ones because we mostly associate politicians in a negative connotation. If they do not see things or believe in the things that we do then they are a threat to our well-being and the way we live. This kind of threat can make a person very defense and so they bash that particular politician by exposing everything that they believe the politician is doing wrong or has a wrong opinion on.

Whereas a statesman refers to more of an individual rather than how we view them. A statesman is our governors, senators, cabinet members, and so on. They are specific people to us. It is more used in a noun form than an adjective form. While there may be certain opinions on that particular statesman they may not be what we all view as a stereotypical politician; which would be all of the adjectives used to describe them.

A politician encompasses a lot of statesman whereas a statesman is just one person and has no alternative meaning.

  2. I really like how you described a politician. It's funny how negatively they can be described. I agree with how a statesman is just a person who represents a figure such as a senator or a governor.
