The
Mythical ‘war on men’ and The war on
men are to opposing arguments to the same idea. And in fact The Mythical ‘war on men’ is a rebuttal
to The war on me. The idea that these
two articles are discussing is the cause of Feminism on men and female attitudes
and how feminism has affected the workplace.
The
war on men was interestingly written by a woman, Suzanne Venker. This side
of the argument claimed that feminism and new world female attitudes have
caused a decrease in men that want to get married. Venker also claims; “Men haven’t
changed much – they had no revolution that demanded it – but women have changed
dramatically.” This statement seems to point the blame at the women, instead of
men, for this change. This statement was surprising, especially coming from a
woman. A woman making a bold statement such as, “what if the dearth of good men
is… women’s fault,” makes the statement much more believable and in my opinion
more valid. Venker has validity in what she says however I don’t believe that
she is completely right. Men can take care of themselves and do not need women
to surrender to them, like she says near the end. Men just need to stick up for
themselves and not fall into the control of women like Venker claims most men
do.
Micheal Kimmel, author of The mythical ‘war on men’, strongly disagrees
with Venker and does so aggressively I feel like. I feel like his argument is
valid as well, however is very defensive. This response was publish only three
days after the first and was an obvious rebuttal. In this article Kimmel
claims; “Men aren’t nearly as unhappy or resentful as Venker suggests… Truth
is, in her efforts to exalt men, she actually insults us.” Kimmel takes Venkers
article as an “insult”, which is an interesting approach that I did not see
when I read it the Venker’s article, however I it see now.
Both of these arguments have both
valid and logical points to support their side but at a reader I would support
Suzanne Venker’s The war on men.
